Solar Installers in SA – The Problems and Opportunities

The disruption of loadshedding has led to a surge in demand for solar installers. While this presents significant opportunities for those in the industry, it also brings along a set of challenges.

In this article, we interview some of the experts in the field to explore
what problems has arisen and what opportunity lies in doing solar the right way.

First up, Our Electrical Compliance Partner from BravoScan. His company is aligned with the Department of Labour and are used as a 3rd party to inspect when an installation went wrong.

How does the industry deal with the threat of the public being scammed by dodgy operators providing who are not really solar installers, but rather out to make a quick buck?

The Department of Labour maintains a registered database containing information about all the registered electrical contractors and electricians. However, if you have a personal inquiry, it is necessary to contact the Office of the Provincial Chief Inspector. It’s important to note that the response time for these inquiries can be slow.

According to Electrical Installation Regulation 11, it is required that electrical contractors or registered individuals provide proof of their registration with the Department of Employment and Labour upon request by a consumer. Failing to do so is considered an offense. However, it’s worth mentioning that there have been instances of fraud involving these documents. Therefore, it is advisable to ensure and verify the authenticity of the provided documents.

To address this issue, it is crucial for the public to request proof of registration from the electrical contractor and the electrician who issued the Certificate of Compliance (COC). It’s important to note that these registrations are independent of each other. Additionally, the public should also request the National Conformity and Regulation Service (NCRS) certificate for any electrical equipment used, in addition to the COC for the installation. It’s worth noting that the COC only covers the installation itself and not the electrical equipment.

Are you aware that already there appears to be a second-hand 'black market' in stolen product. Some thieves are targeting panels given the huge demand. How does the industry deal with this threat?

The rise of organized syndicates engaging in targeted theft has become a growing concern, particularly when it comes to batteries and inverters. It’s worth noting that many high-end products now come equipped with internet connectivity, allowing them to be locked as soon as they are installed and connected.

This feature renders the stolen products useless, discouraging criminals from targeting them. To ensure the legitimacy of these products, it is crucial to perform serial number verification. If any doubts arise, contacting the manufacturer or importer to verify that the units have entered the country through proper channels is essential. Failure to do so may result in warranties and support not being honored.

Importers, wholesalers, and other entities involved in the industry typically employ robust physical security systems. It’s important to recognize that criminals require buyers for their stolen goods. Therefore, it is the responsibility of wholesalers, resellers, and installers to verify their supply chain. This collective effort plays a significant role in ensuring the sustainability of the industry.

Lastly, it’s important to remember the age-old saying: if a price seems too good to be true, it usually is. Exercise caution and skepticism when encountering unusually low prices, as they may indicate illicit activities.

At the level of installation, could this infrastructure pose a fire hazard if not installed properly? Would you say there needs to be more care taken when making this particular investment?

Having the correct electrical qualifications and registration is undeniably crucial, but it alone does not guarantee that a contractor possesses the necessary expertise to install inverters, batteries, or solar panels effectively.

Regrettably, we come across numerous installations completed by registered individuals that fail to comply with the manufacturers’ requirements. Issues such as insufficient ventilation spacing can lead to overheating problems and increased fire risks. Moreover, incorrect setup often results in a significant portion of the equipment’s functionality going unused.

To ensure both correctness and safety during installations, reputable installers typically employ registered installation electricians alongside product specialists and height-safety experts. This comprehensive approach ensures all aspects of the installation meet the necessary standards.

Beyond electrical risks, there are other legal requirements that must also be adhered to, especially when working on roofs. Only an IWH certified and registered Fall Arrest Technician or Rope Access Technician should undertake tasks in areas where there is a risk of falling from a structure. Surprisingly, this aspect is sometimes overlooked, but it serves as a clear warning sign for consumers. If a contractor doesn’t prioritize their own life or the safety of their staff, it raises concerns about how much they genuinely care about the well-being of their clients and their property.
